Mere Dholna - Penn Sargam Fall 2022
In the lead up to our spring show, we are proud to present Ananda, our wonderful fall show! Like always, we will be posting our show songs both here and on Youtube at Penn Sargam, so please go check them out in both places! For the next few weeks, you can look forward to hearing our beautiful performances, embodying the happiness we feel when we are on stage! Our first song of the show was Mere Dholna. With the original version championing an uplifting, hopeful and even romantic emotion, the more recent version adds a ‘minor’ tinge with elements of suspense and a sense of foreboding. We hoped to convey that in this battle of major vs minor, light vs dark - essentially good vs evil - good will always prevail. Originally sung by: Shreya Ghoshal, M.G. Sreekumar and Tushar Joshi Originally composed by: Pritam Chakraborty Arranged by: Sriyaa Suresh and Ajay Thatte Vocals: Sriyaa Suresh and Dhruv Bukinkere Synthesizer: Srikar Gudimella Tabla: Arnav Gadre and Shyam Mehta Harmonium: Ajay Thatte Venu Flute: Pavan Raghupathy

Arziyan
Arziyan, written by academy award winning composer A. R. Rahman, is written in the Qawwali Sufi style of music. Sufi music overall is a form of Islamic devotional music performed traditionally by a troupe of vocalists in a lead and follow style accompanied by harmonium and tabla. Sargam has reimagined this song with classical piano, electric guitar and venu flute accompanying the traditional tabla. We have also subbed out the original male vocals in the song with female vocals, transitioning the song to a more angelic nature. When the Cheez Breaks
In an effort to please the gods of rock, Sargam will attempt the fusion of "Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast" from Mohra (1994) and its cover "Cheez Badi" from Batla House (2019) with "When the Levee Breaks" by Led Zeppelin (1971). When the Levee Breaks is itself a hard rock-blues fusion that blends well with the funk influences of Tu Cheez Badi. This arrangement includes Indian classical elements and heavy metal, alongside some good old country and hard rock with, dare we say, a touch of jazz? Roshe
Roshe is a poem written by the 16th century Kashmiri poetess Habba Khatoon. It describes her longing for her male lover, who is angry at her and has left her. For the time period, the expression of female longing was quite revolutionary and thus many artists have aspired to recreate the song over the past few centuries. We believe our rendition, inspired by the Coke Studio version with enchanting vocals by the amazing Zeb Bangash, might leave your hearts broken but your souls full. Aao Balma
We present to you our version of Aao Balma, inspired by A. R. Rahman's coke studio rendition of the sublime piece born out of the beautiful fusion of Hindustani, Carnatic and Western music theory. It is set in the Hindustani raag or musical scale Yaman, which is analogous to the Carnatic raag Kalyani. In traditional western classical music theory, this also translates to the Lydian mode built off of the 4th note of a traditional major scale. The song is a call for a loved one during the beautiful monsoon season in India.
